Project Period: 2017 to Date
Funding Partner: Crisis Elephant
The elephants of Mt. Elgon are the only elephants in the world known to go deep underground to mine salt. This unique elephant culture, along with severe threats to the survival of elephants on the mountain and the wider precarious environmental status of Mt. Elgon, provide a strong call to urgent action before this important regional population of elephants is lost. Their security profile and exposure to poaching has, until the inception of this project, been largely unassessed
This project aims to develop the information and intelligence capabilities of the ground team for the protection and conservation of Mt. Elgon’s elephants. It will define and map the locations of all the active elephant caves and produce movement data to inform elephant migration routes. It will also estimate the size of the elephant population on Mt. Elgon and its relative distribution.
