About Us
We promote the conservation and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources in the region of East Africa.
The East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) prides itself as being the voice of conservation in East Africa region with special focus on Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We are registered as a not-for-profit Non-Governmental Organization in Kenya. Having been established in 1956 through a merger of the Kenyan and Tanzanian Wildlife Societies and wildlife enthusiasts from Uganda, we are one of the pioneer membership-based, public benefit conservation organizations in East Africa. For over 60 years, we have distinguished ourselves as champions of conservation in East Africa by consistently providing much needed solutions
to some of the most diverse and complex conservation challenges in the region with great success. We have been at the forefront of protecting endangered, rare or threatened species and habitats in East Africa. We have also over decades taken the leading role in facilitating and contributing towards the formulation and implementation of policies and laws on natural resource management with the view of safeguarding ecosystems and the biodiversity therein for the socio-economic wellbeing of people living in East Africa.
As the voice of conservation in East Africa region, we deploy evidence-based advocacy to monitor enforcement of the natural resources laws and policies, promote sustainable development and protection of critical ecosystems for wildlife.
Our mission is to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources in East Africa through: Advocacy; Conservation programs; Scientific research; Environmental education; Promotion of sustainable development and Capacity building of local communities, government institutions and the general public to conserve nature and the environment for posterity, with a clear vision of ensuring a world in which nature and people co-exist in mutual benefit.
Our goal is to combat biodiversity loss and degradation in East Africa region by addressing issues of conservation relating to: Climate change; Environmental pollution; Deforestation; Infrastructural development and Weak environmental governance. Our advocacy and conservation programs focus on four thematic areas: Wildlife, Forestry, Marine and Wetlands.

Mission
As the voice of environmental conservation in East Africa, we promote the conservation and sustainable use of the environment and natural resources in the region through advocacy and by engaging governments and non-state actors to participate in our initiatives.
Our Approach
We Influence Public Policy
Through advocacy, we take the lead role in influencing legislators and other relevant stakeholders in reviewing, formulating, passing and implementing environmental laws and associated policies for better management of nature and sustainable use of natural resources using evidence-based research.

We Implement Projects
We implement environmental projects that aim to improve ecosystems and promote their sustenance and support livelihoods of surrounding communities who in turn ensure the protection of natural resources and natural habitats. We believe that local communities living in wildlife areas are the stewards of community conservation.

We believe that local communities living in wildlife areas are the stewards of community conservation. We, therefore, employ a strong community-based approach towards project implementation and build capacities of local communities to sustainably manage and utilize natural resources and for better livelihoods. We work closely with Beach Management Units (BMUs), Community Forest Associations (CFAs), Water Resource Users Associations (WRUAs) and Community Wildlife Conservancies.
