Imre Loefler Lecture

NO LIFE WITHOUT BEES…

In conjunction with Muthaiga Country Club, Imre Loefler lecture will be given on Thursday 8th April 2010 by Dino J. Martins.   Dino Martins who won the The Whitley Award last year presented by Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal – Princess Anne in London will be speaking to you on honeybees.

Recently there has been growing alarm about the loss of the honeybee in many countries. As honeybees have disappeared, crops and wild ecosystems have suffered as the pollination services they provide collapse. Sadly, the die-offs being experienced by bees can be directly blamed on human activities. However, there is still hope – the problem can be, and must be, fixed. Honeybees originate in Africa – evidence comes from both from modern genetics as well as ancient rock art and the folklore of hunter-gatherer peoples. Africa is blessed with a rich diversity of bees and a long and complex history of association between bees and people. The honeybee is one of the earth’s best-studied organisms. Honeybees live in complex families, just like we do, they communicate with one another in an elegant language and as Einstein pointed out, “without bees there is no hope for humans on the planet.”

“One in three bites of food can be attributed to a pollinator”. This talk will also highlight the role of pollinators in our lives. An overlooked ‘ecosystem service’, pollination, is essential to humanity. In Africa pollinators are primarily wild insects that travel between farms and natural habitat, and are extremely vulnerable to habitat loss and destruction. Pollinators intimately link wild species with basic human livelihoods. The relationships between insects and flowers are at once ancient, beautifully intricate and correspondingly fragile. Saving pollinators justifies conservation of small species-rich habitats, such as forest patches and contributes to food security and rural livelihoods of the communities living close to nature/alongside critically endangered species.

Dino J. Martins, an environmentalist and biologist, is currently a PhD student in entomology in the Department of Organism and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. A respected researcher and writer, he has published numerous articles in scientific, natural history, and environmental magazines including: International Journal of Tropical Insect Science, Nature East Africa, the East Africa Natural History Society Bulletin, Swara, Nature Net, Ecoforum, and the Journal of the East African Wildlife Society.
